if you want to get rid of placeables in the source text I think you need to look at the source file using the program that was used to produce it. For instance, placeables can represent the start and the end of bold style n a Word document.

However, this is not really necessary. If you feel that the placeables are irrelevant for the file you are working on, just do not insert them into the target, or add them to the start or to the end of the translated segment that contains them.

Placeables: Wordfast inserts placeables in my source texts. Wordfast help says you can click in the text of a placeable to edit or remove it, but the cursor cannot be placed anywhere in the source text, so I am stuck with these placeables. Am I missing something?

I gave different network group names to each computer. I would still get file sharing between computers by bookmarking the folder share on a different network, so no harm done. Still, in some cases you may need all the PCs connected to the same network for using other services.

I like your solution better, anyway!

There is a need to check the accuracy and quality of documents translated by machine. As you said – start learning new skills, such as machine translation post-editing – has to be done. We do have a number of projects like this, as there are many things that still have to be corrected. Inaccurately translated documents are a common occurrence that causes delays in projects, among other things.

I’m no google employee, but for fairnes’ sake: Google does not *sell* translation; they offer a possibility to set up “private” TMs and there’s no indication yet they’d break confidentiality on those. Google is just another way of doing things. I don’t see the point in fear mongering. Bashing the big guys has always been an easy, chic thing to do. So my comment:

..if they /decide/ to. So what. Bear in mind not all translations are for-profit. Countless minority languages, translations for humanitarian or cultural purposes, etc, will find a great help in the Google paradigm. Forget money for a second, Jap.

If anything: get inspiration from them and do your own thing.
